Last year BSc Geography student Katrina Murphy was a successful candidate for the Operations Intern role. We asked Katrina a few questions to shed some light on this great opportunity:

Why did you want to work at RHS?

As it is such a well-known company I thought it would be an amazing experience to gain an insight into the work involved at the company and to play a part in the creation of such a new and exciting show. It is also an area of work which is new to me so was keen to learn more about it and try something new.

What do you think are the benefits of working at RHS?

I have gained a well-rounded knowledge of operational work which I didn’t have before, as well as working with such amazing staff and feeling part of the team straight away.

What do you think you have added to the business?

I helped to run the operational department and played a role in the running of the show and a lot of behind the scenes work. I was able to not only help members of staff but also the exhibitors of the show as well as members of the public.

What was the biggest surprise?

The size of the show and how big of an operation it was. I didn’t expect there to be so many different companies working for the show and for how vast the actual show was.

What is the most exciting thing you have done since working at RHS?

Working with some well-known gardeners helping them to prepare and set up the show. I was given so many exciting opportunities to work with different people to do such a variety of jobs.

What have you gained from your experience at RHS?

This is both personal and career development. I have gained experience in operational work which is something I had little previous experience in. When I first started I wasn’t confident in the work I was doing but by the end of the internship I felt like I really understood the work that I did and feel like I can continue this through to future jobs. I have also grown as a person and become more confident in speaking to new people and problem solving.

Would you recommend an internship to current students? If yes please explain why

Yes. It was an amazing experience which not only enabled me to gain many new skills but was also a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I felt part of the team straight away and felt like I really did help contribute to the running of the show.
