My Summer Internship Experience…
For many university students, the arrival of summer means relaxation, and a halt from late night study, in addition to demanding assignments and exams. Many students spend their summer pool side, enjoying foreign sunshine, working on their tans, and living care free. I thought of a way to relish my summer in this way whilst pursuing my future career visions.
The importance of gaining real life work experience was made very clear to me early on. Fortunately, I found an opportunity to gain internships in Dubai with international Law Firms. This provided me with the chance to pursue experience in my prospective career field, whilst enjoying a pool side summer, and wonderful temperatures that were at times physically testing.
The internships I took part in throughout the summer enhanced me with a stepping stone of opportunities, namely, broadening my network, and experiencing how law is practised in the Middle East.In addition, this experience also expanded the basic foundation of my ambitions. The practicalities of how a law firm operates, the level of education, skills and knowledge required, in addition to the etiquette that must always be on display were just a few of the key factors I gathered during my experience.
My internships took place at two international firms based on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai. Both firms provided me with a priceless opportunity and understanding. On a day to day basis, I took part in client meetings, trips to the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) which is an impartial court in Dubai which implements international laws. I also shadowed solicitors which practised areas of law that I have studied and picked for my final year modules which I benefited a lot from.
If I could point out the best part of having these Internships under my belt is the networking opportunities it has provided for me.Not only do you liaise with seasoned professionals, but you meet individuals who have endured and come from similar backgrounds with remarkable and motivating stories and experiences that provide that extra drive to chase my goals and push myself to the limit.
Internships may seem difficult to come across and at times intimidating, however, it is key to examine your interests in depth, to provide you with confidence in your abilities. As you develop and pave way for your career path, the key thing to remember is to be yourself, and let your natural light be on display.Chase the opportunities that reflect what you are about, and where you want to go.As always, enjoy and thrive on all life prospects.
